The Psoas muscle is a major hip flexor which rotates the thigh laterally (outward).
It originates along the transverse processes of the lumbar spine and inserts at the lesser trochanter of the femur.
Psoas issues can be a contributing cause of lower back pain, however it can be difficult to access with massage. It may be worked via the sides while the client lays face down, but more often (and less comfortably) it is accessed through the front to release the upper portion.
Deep lunges (with the hips straight) will help to stretch out the length of the muscle, and a good stretch to employ for those who sit at their desk all day – as the muscle can tighten due to the hip joint being in a shortened position all day.
