I love to travel, it’s no secret. It inspires me, excites me, and empowers me! While I love all the planning and being on the road, it must be said that there are stressful elements to going overseas (or interstate) and it is not always easy to eat as nutritionally as you would like. So in this handy age of smart phones a good travel app is your best friend and the easiest way to keep healthy while lost in a foreign city. There are lots of options out there, but we like these ones:
Insight Timer, Headspace, & Calm; These meditation apps have thousands of guided meditations to choose from – long and short depending on how much time you have to spare. Stress is inevitable while travelling so these little apps will help reduce anxiety, manage stress, help sleep and improve happiness, which can only be a bonus when there is yet another flight delay….
Find Me Gluten Free; a life saver for those with gluten intolerance. Including maps, this app lists all the genuine gluten free restaurants in your area.
Happy Cow; Another food app to help you locate the nearest or best vegan option wherever you are. No more charades and unhappy surprises!
Timeshifter; jetlag is the worst. Officially. But there are clever ways to combat it before you even leave and this app is one of them. It is designed to adjust the circadian clock to your destination time zone and give you an optimal sleep-wake schedule. Tweaking your schedule a little before you leave means less staggering about your destination like a zombie for days, that can only be a good thing.
Yoga Studio: ready made yoga sessions to keep you moving while away. Suitable for beginner to advanced. Short sessions – good for stretching out while changing flights, longer classes to sustain you during the trip. (Though, there really are a lot of yoga apps to choose from now, so browse what suits you; Down Dog looks fun!)
Mindbody; Find yoga or fitness classes wherever you are. Studios and clinics around the world are using mind body now so you’ll never be without access to a studio session or a massage!
MyFitnessPal; while i’ve never really subscribed to the watch what you eat approach when travelling, it is prudent to be more mindful of your calorie intake unless you feel like buying a whole new wardrobe to fit into before you even come home. This app tracks macros of what you are consuming and helps to make more informed choices. Feeling healthier while on the road makes for a more enjoyable experience and really gives you the energy to track up that hill for the killer view.
Meetup; a worldwide app that helps you find like minded people for any activity you are in the mood for. Want to join a yoga session on the beach at sunrise? In the mood to go for a hike but don’t want to do it alone? This app will help you to find local people you can join. Sometimes travelling can be lonely, but meeting up with others when you’re in the mood is just a click away.
CDC; this app will keep you up to date will local health information in your region. While less of a ‘fun’ app it is super useful to know if there is a cholera outbreak happening before you arrive, or bird flu is rife. Better to know before you go!
Happy travels!
